What to know more before you sign up?
Here’s a few FAQ we think you’ll like. If you have a question not showing here, ask us, we don’t mind.
What are the steps of joining as a SASU member?
- Fill in the Join us form to register your interest.
- The form gets sent to the SASU manager who will record your details on Online Scout Manager (OSM).
- The SASU manager may ask for a 5-minute chat, this is just to gain an understanding of:
- What you’d like to help with,
- What skills you’d like to bring to the unit
- What skills you’d like to learn from the unit to pass on to the young people in the group?
- Answer any questions you have about the Unit
- Talk about the basic training requirements for a SASU member
- Once the above is complete, a date will be agreed upon to be added to Compass, your 5 months will start now to complete your “Getting Started” E-Learning.
- A DBS check will be started.
That’s it, you can take part in activities and events the Unit and group has to offer.
I’ve never been in Scouting, can I join the Unit?
Yes, any over 18 can join the Scout Active Support Unit, no Scouting knowledge is required.
I am involved with another SASU, can I join Hayling’s too?
Yes, you can be a member in another SASU or join another while with us, just inform the SASUM.
I don’t know how much time I can offer, can I still join?
Yes, of course, you can. Scout Active Support Units are designed for supporting the group when you want to be involved with flexible volunteering.
What is the commitment?
There is no minimum commitment.
The only thing that’ll be required of you is to complete a few basic short online training modules.
Your commitment is down to you, you’ll be invited to everything we have going on if you’re interested and available simply sign up. You can get involved with as much as you like. So, if you sign up originally to help at the Airgun club but fancy doing a backwoods cooking evening with Cubs, for example, you can!
I’ve seen training mentioned, how long does it take and how quick do I have to complete it?
There is training. But, nothing like the leadership team!
As a SASU member, we will be working with Young People as well as the leaders. So, you have 4 Basic online modules to complete in your own time.
- Essential information
- Safety*
- Safeguarding*
- GDPR
Some other modules may be added depending on the way you get involved. Your SASUM will discuss this as it becomes appropriate.
The above modules are required to be completed within 5 months of the role starting on Compass.
*These modules last 3 years. They will then be required to be re-validated. This is to keep us all current on the Safety and Safeguarding of Young People in Scouting.
Do I need a DBS (CRB) check?
Yes, SASU members will need an in-date Scout Association DBS check. This will be completed when you are issued with your role as “Scout Active Support Member”.
If you have a DBS outside of Scouting, these are not accepted by the Scout Association.
DBS will be valid for 5 years (changing to 3 years soon), initial checks and renewals are free.
I have a DBS check through my job, can you use this one?
Unfortunately not, the Scout Association does not accept checks from other organisations nor do most organisations accept Scout Association checks. These are completed free of charge to you when you start your role with us and so are renewals.
I’d like to share my skills with others how is this possible?
Providing skills to others is the purpose of the Unit within the group. There are several ways to do this,
- Within the unit – We would like to hold our own meetings now and again where we can all learn skills from each other and do our own activities.
- A leaders skills session – like within the Unit we can hold sessions for the leaders where they get to learn the skills to pass on to their section
- For a section directly – From time to time leaders may request help with a specific activity for an evening session. If you’d like to know more about running a session contact your SASU Manager.
